TULSA, Okla.- Ole Miss men’s tennis sophomore William Kallberg continued his run in the singles qualifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships with a tight two set first round victory.
Ranked No. 56 in the nation, Kallberg defeated Wake Forest’s David Hopkins 7-6, 7-5 to move on to the second round at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Kallberg will play Joe Salisbury of Memphis, who played No. 1 singles last year when the Rebels defeated the Tigers in Oxford. Kallberg is three wins from joining Nik Scholtz and Jonas Lutjen in the main draw.
After winning four matches to advance to the qualifying draw, junior Johan Backstrom was on the losing end of a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 battle with Florida’s Michael Alford.
Backstrom and Kallberg will begin doubles play in the qualifying draw, which begins Tuesday, and are looking to join Scholtz and Lutjen in the main draw.
