Rebel Duo Advances at ITA Fall Championships
Nov. 1, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. –  Ole Miss men’s tennis went 1-1 on day one of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships Wednesday, with Tim Sandkaulen dropping his singles match and then Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic winning in doubles at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Babic/Kraljevic dominate third set to advance…
Senior Zvonimir Babic and junior Filip Kraljevic teamed back up together after a year apart on the courts and won the ITA Southern Regional title to earn their ticket to the fall championships. They played well to start the match up 6-2, 3-0, but Texas Tech’s Jackson Cobb and Alex Sendegeya, hung in there and rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4) to force a 10-point tiebreaker for the match.

The third set supertiebreaker was all Ole Miss as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Cobb and Sendegeya won a point. They won two more points, before Babic and Kraljevic closed it out 10-3 to remain undefeated at 6-0.

Babic and Kraljevic will face the No. 7 seeds, McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale of Florida Thursday in the second round.

Sandkaulen falls in three…
Tim Sandkaulen dropped a three-setter, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-1, to Arizona State’s Benjamin Hannestad in the first round of singles.

Sandkaulen didn’t get off to a great start in the match, going down 0-3 in the first set and eventually dropping it 6-3. He battled back in the second set and won it in a tiebreaker, 7-6(6) to force a winner-take-all third set. Seeming to have momentum on his side, Sandkaulen didn’t start off well in the final set and Hannestad took advantage going on to win it 6-1 to advance. Sandkaulen will play in the consolation round Thursday.

Courtside with assistant coach Devin Britton
“Zvonimir and Filip did a great job today on the doubles court. They played extremely well from the start of the match to find themselves up 6-2 3-0. Texas Tech hung in there and was able to regain some momentum in the second set.  I was really proud of the way we handled ourselves after facing a little adversity dropping the second set in a tiebreaker. We bounced back immediately and played a great 10-point tiebreaker to move on to the next round.  Tomorrow they go up against a tough Florida team, and I know they are looking forward to the challenge.

On Tim’s match…
“Tim battled hard after being down a set and a break 6-3 4-3 to win a tough tiebreaker in the second. He had some great opportunities early in the third set which he was not able to take advantage of. Tim will make a couple of minor adjustments and be ready to go again tomorrow in the consolation draw.”
