Sandkaulen Earns Win at ITA Fall Championships
Nov. 2, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – After a disappointing loss in the first round of the ITA National Fall Championships, Ole Miss men’s tennis sophomore Tim Sandkaulen bounced back to post a straight set win in consolation, while teammates Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic dropped a heartbreaker in the round of 16 doubles Thursday.

In other Rebels in action, senior Gustav Hansson advanced to the quarterfinals in singles at the ITF Futures in Birmingham, Alabama.

Sandkaulen posts bounce back win…
In the first round of consolation, Tim Sandkaulen defeated Kiranpal Pannu of Columbus State 6-2, 6-3. He broke early in the first set and never looked back for 6-2. Pannu got an early break to go up 2-0 in the second set, but then Sandkaulen broke back and then broke to go ahead for good on the way to 6-3.

Sandkaulen, who improved to 7-2 on the year, will face Georgia’s Jan Zielinski in the second round Friday.

Babic/Kraljevic end fall season…
Zvonimir Babic and Filip Kraljevic suffered their first loss of the season (6-1) at the hands of the No. 7 seeds, McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale of Florida, but the Rebel duo did not go down without a fight. They trailed the opening set 0-3, but rallied and got within game points of tying the set before dropping it 6-4. Florida gained a break in the second set, but the Rebels broke right back before saving multiple break points and breaking for a 5-3 lead. They held for 6-3 to force a third set supertiebreaker.

The third set 10-point breaker was a back and forth affair going to extra points, before the Florida duo won the final two points to take it 13-11 and the match.

Results
Singles consolation first round
Tim Sandkaulen (OM) def. Kiranapal Pannu (CS) 6-2, 6-3

Doubles round of 16
McClain Kessler/Duarte Vale (UF) def. Zvonimir Babic/Filip Kraljevic (OM) 6-4, 3-6, 13-11

Courtside with assistant coach Devin Britton
“Z and Filip are playing some great doubles.  It was a heartbreaking result to go down 13-11 in the supertiebreaker, but I couldn't be happier with the way they battled throughout the match.  They are going to be a tough team to beat all year, and I know they’re excited to get after it in the spring.

On Tim’s match…
“Tim came out and took care of business.  He looked calm and collected from start to finish.  He served well and really put a lot of pressure on his opponent.  It's going to be another big day for him tomorrow. I'm confident he will be ready to go.”

Hansson rallies to reach quarterfinals in futures…
Gustav Hansson qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships, but elected to instead compete in the ITF Futures in Birmingham, Alabama. Hansson earned a berth in the main draw, but rain delayed the start of play forcing him to play twice on Thursday. In the first round, he beat Alexios Halebian 7-6(3), 6-2. Hansson faced a familiar opponent in the second round, Alabama’s Thibault Cancel. After getting off to a slow start, Hansson rallied to win it 0-6, 6-2, 6-2.
