Sandkaulen into Consolation Semifinals of ITA Fall Championships
Nov. 3, 2017

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – After dropping his first-round match at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, Ole Miss men’s tennis sophomore Tim Sandkaulen has bounced back to win three straight matches to advance to the consolation semifinals.

While Sandkaulen was busy winning twice on Friday in California, his teammate, senior Gustav Hansson took care of business in straight sets to advance to the semifinals of singles at the Birmingham Futures.

Sandkaulen goes back-to-back Friday…
In his first match of the day Friday, Sandkaulen, ranked No. 85 in the nation, defeated Georgia’s Jan Zielinski in straight sets. Sandkaulen got broken three times in set one to go down 1-4, but he won five straight games to take it 6-4. In the second set, Zielinski served for the set at 6-5, but Sandkaulen broke back and then won the tiebreaker 7-6(4) to advance to the quarterfinals.

Later in the afternoon, Sandkaulen held off UCSB’s Nicolas Moreno in three sets in the quarterfinals. Sandkaulen led the first set 4-2, but Moreno won four of the next five games to go up 6-5. Sandkaulen held served and then came back from 2-4 down in the tiebreaker to win it 7-6(5). Moreno broke at 3-3 in the second set and went on to win it 6-3 to force a decisive third set. Sandkaulen regrouped quickly and raced out to a 4-0 lead in set three. He never looked back to win it 6-2 and advance to the semifinals.

Sandkaulen (9-2) will face Mississippi State’s Giovanni Oradini Saturday in the semifinals.

Courtside with assistant coach Devin Britton
“I feel like Tim grew up a little bit in front of our eyes today. The way he handled himself and was able to face adversity all day long was extremely impressive. I'm very happy for him. To come out and get two wins against ranked opponents in the same day is never easy.  His hard work is clearly making a difference in his game. Looking forward to seeing him go at it again tomorrow.”
