OXFORD, Miss. –The Ole Miss men’s tennis team, ranked No. 18 nationally, bolstered its roster for the 2011 season and beyond with the addition of Swedish standout Johan Backstrom, head coach Billy Chadwick announced Wednesday.
“We’re excited about Johan joining the team,” said Chadwick, a recent Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame inductee. “We expect him to make an immediate contribution. A late bloomer in the tennis rankings, he has shown great improvement in the last year, moving up to top three in his age division (two players ahead of him are playing full-time on the professional tour).
In addition to being ranked No. 3 in his age division, Backstrom rose to No. 21 in the Swedish Men’s Rankings.
Backstrom hails from the same hometown (Uppsala, Sweden) as 2009 SEC Tournament MVP and senior Kalle Norberg.
The Rebels begin the 2011 season this weekend at the SEC Indoor Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee, the 2010 NCAA Runner-up will host the four-day event, which has become one of the top individual tournaments in the country.
Backstrom, making his debut for the Rebels, will be joined by senior Tucker Vorster, sophomores Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Jonas Lutjen and freshman Alex Durham. Durham (Austin, Texas) joined the team in the fall.
