Men’s Tennis to Open 2018 Season

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team will usher in a new year and a new indoor tennis center Saturday, hosting a doubleheader against Southern Mississippi and Troy. Sunday, the Rebels will host Alcorn State in a doubleheader.

Saturday’s action starts at 11 a.m. with Southern Miss and then concludes at 4 p.m. with Troy. Sunday’s doubleheader against Alcorn State will begin at 1 p.m.  

The new indoor tennis center is located at the southeast corner of the Manning Center behind the track.

Fans will receive 20 Rebel Rewards Points and a free poster of senior Zvonimir Babic on Saturday. Sunday, fans can earn another 20 Rebel Rewards and get a free poster of Fabian Fallert.

Fall Rewind
• Sophomore Tim Sandkaulen captured the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, his first collegiate title.
• Senior Gustav Hansson reached the quarterfinals at the All-American Championships and beat a top-10 player.
• Senior Zvonimir Babic and junior Filip Kraljevic won the ITA Southern Regional Championship.
• Sandkaulen reached the quarterfinals of the regional championships and earned an at-large bid to the fall championships. 
• Hansson also qualified for the ITA National Fall Championships, but elected to play the ITF Futures in Birmingham, Alabama instead, where he reached the semifinals.
• At the ITA National Fall Championships, Sandkaulen reached the semifinals of the consolation and picked up three quality wins along the way to finish the fall with a team-leading 9-3 record. Babic and Kraljevic went 1-1 with a close loss in the second round to the current No. 10 team in the nation and finished the fall with a 6-1 record.

Ranking the Rebels
The Rebels are one of eight teams nationally to have four players ranked in the latest singles rankings. Tim Sandkaulen is ranked No. 14, Gustav Hansson is ranked No. 32, Zvonimir Babic is ranked No. 69 and Filip Kraljevic is ranked No. 86. Babic and Kraljevic are ranked No. 20 in doubles. 

Scouting Southern Miss
Saturday marks the season opener for Southern Miss as well. The Golden Eagles finished 21-5 in 2017, the second-best record in program history. Southern Miss reached the semifinals of the C-USA tournament for the first time since 2009. The Golden Eagles are led by senior Wen-Po Tseng.

Ole Miss leads the all-time series 21-2 including a 7-0 win in 2016.

Scouting Troy
This marks the season opener for Troy, who finished 14-11 in 2017. The Trojans are a young team with only one senior, six freshmen and four sophomores.

This marks the third meeting in four years against Troy. The Rebels defeated the Trojans 6-1, two years ago in Oxford.

Finn’s Up
Fans will notice a new face on the courts this year, as the Rebels welcomed New Zealand native Finn Reynolds to the program. An excellent doubles player, Reynolds reached the 2017 Junior Australian Open Doubles Final, becoming the first male player from New Zealand to reach a junior grand slam doubles final since 1993. Reynolds owns a career-high World Junior Ranking of No. 83 and went out with a bang in 2017, capturing the New Zealand National Singles Championship.
