BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss men's tennis player Nik Scholtz has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Wednesday.  The honor marks the first of his career.

The South African went 5-1 last week in singles and doubles against No. 3 Virginia, No. 19 Tennessee and No. 6 Georgia.  Scholtz posted wins over the No. 53, the No. 36 and the No. 3 ranked players in singles.  He improved to 8-1 at No. 1 singles and 4-0 in the SEC.  Scholtz has won seven in a row and is 7-1 against nationally ranked opponents this year.

Scholtz is one of only two players in the SEC playing No. 1 singles.  As a result of his strong week, Scholtz jumped up to No. 12 in the latest ITA Singles Rankings released Tuesday.

The Rebels are in Florida this week and will play at Division II powerhouse West Florida Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
