OXFORD, Miss. - The 2012 season is barely in the books, and the Ole Miss men's tennis team is already looking ahead to 2013, with the announcement Tuesday that the Rebels were one of 15 sites selected for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend.
This marks the third time for the Rebels to host this event, which began in 2009 as a prelude to the ITA National Team Indoor. Sixty teams are competing for one of 15 spots in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship to be held Feb. 15-18 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Washington earns an automatic spot as the host.
The top 15 nationally-ranked teams in the final 2012 ITA National Rankings were chosen as host sites. Ole Miss will welcome Louisville, North Carolina State and Columbia. First round matches will be played Friday, Jan. 25, and second round matches will be played Saturday, Jan. 26. All matches will be held at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Rebels ended the 2012 season ranked No. 14 nationally--marking the program's 17th top -15 finish since 1994--and reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the 16th time. Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann reached the NCAA Final Four in doubles and SEC Freshman of the Year Nik Scholtz advanced to the quarterfinals in singles.
