Scholtz Highlights Rebels In Preseason Rankings
Nik Scholtz

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team is well-represented in the preseason ITA Individual National Rankings, which were announced Friday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, with three players in singles and one doubles team earning recognition.

Sophomore Nik Scholtz (Caledon, South Africa) begins the year ranked No. 5 in the nation in singles.  Last year's SEC Freshman of the Year, Scholtz is the highest ranked player in the league.  He earned the highest preseason ranking by a Rebel in singles since three-time All-American Catalin Gard began the 2004-05 year No. 1.

In addition to earning the league's top rookie honor in 2012, Scholtz reached the NCAA Elite Eight in singles and became the second freshman in Ole Miss men's tennis history to earn All-America honors.

Senior Jonas Lutjen grabbed a No. 21 ranking in singles, his highest individual singles ranking of his career.   The Schessel, Germany native earned All-America honors last year in addition to All-SEC second team laurels.

Sophomore William Kallberg (Stockholm, Sweden) picked up a preseason ranking of No. 56 in singles.

Scholtz and Lutjen team up to form the nation's No. 2 ranked doubles tandem. The pair ended the 2012 campaign in the top 10 and posted an 8-3 record at No. 1 doubles.

The Rebels are in Athens, Ga., this weekend competing in the first tournament of the fall, the Southern Intercollegiates.
