OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men’s tennis player Johan Backstrom and Rebel women’s golfer Stani Schiavone’s excellence in the classroom earned them induction into the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Both were among 171 students honored at Sunday’s initiation ceremony at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for all academic disciplines. It’s highly selective membership is a stamp of excellence that is recognized by graduate and professional school admissions committees and employers alike. Membership is based on a student’s sound character and academic standing. Juniors must have completed 72 credit hours and rank in the top 7.5 percent of their class, while seniors and graduate students must rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
“Johan and Stani are prime examples of the success that we strive for with each and every student-athlete at the University of Mississippi,” said senior associate athletics director Derek Cowherd. “Both are deserving of this honor because they continually exhibit the work ethic and great attitude necessary to be part of the prestigious top 7.5 percent of the junior class.”
Backstrom (Uppsala, Sweden) holds a cumulative 3.89 grade point average in banking and finance. He is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, a Capital One Academic All-District honoree, a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a regular on the Chancellor’s Honor Roll. Last spring, Backstrom helped lead the Rebels to their 10th SEC West title, 20th consecutive NCAA appearance and a final ranking of No. 10 in the nation.
Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) owns a 3.96 GPA in math education. She is a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and was named to the Chancellor’s Honor Roll both semesters last year. Schiavone competed in seven tournaments in her first year with the Rebels last season — after transferring from Baylor — and finished in 8th place at the Clover Cup where she set career-bests for round and tournament score with a 73-71-72—216. Schiavone has participated in every tournament this fall for the Rebels.
