OXFORD, Miss. – Sebastian Rios, the No. 1 ranked player in Mississippi, will join the Ole Miss men’s tennis team in the fall of 2018, head coach Toby Hansson announced Thursday.

“We are excited to have Sebastian join our team in the fall of 2018,” Hansson said. He is a Rebel through and through. Sebastian plays an attacking game style with a big serve. He is a competitor and a hard worker, and we look forward to working with him to help him fulfill his potential.”

A native of Baldwyn, Mississippi, Rios reached as high as No. 6 in the Southern Rankings and has been the No. 1 player in Mississippi for several years. This past year he won the 6A State Championship at Tupelo High School.

A six-time member of the Mississippi Southern Cup Team, Rios was named 2016 Most Valuable Player. Rios advanced to the fourth round of singles and second round of doubles in the 16s at Kalamazoo Nationals.

In 2016, Rios helped Mississippi advance to the Silver Division of the Icy Hot Southern Junior Cup for the first time in 29 years beating five-star recruit and current Clemson freshman Beau Pelletier from South Carolina.

Rios recently received the Mississippi Tennis Association 2017 Mississippi Dorothy Vest Player of the Year Award and in 2016, earned the Mississippi Tennis Association George Wilkinson Memorial Award.

An all-around athlete, Rios played baseball, soccer and basketball growing up before focusing on tennis and joining the KE Tennis Academy. His coach, Keith Evans, played No. 1 singles for the Rebels in 1990.

An outstanding student, Rios will graduate early in December from Tupelo High School and enroll at Ole Miss in the fall of 2018.
