OXFORD, Miss. – There’s no place like home. Ole Miss men’s tennis alum Nik Scholtz would agree after capturing his second pro title in three weeks in his home country of South Africa. Scholtz won the singles title at the Digicall Futures in Stellenbosch Sunday.

Six Titles in 2017…
For the second time in three weeks, Scholtz beat Frenchman Leny Mitjana in the final for his sixth title of the year and 13th overall. The top-seeded Scholtz rallied to win 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(2) against the No. 5 seed. That marked the fourth meeting overall and third in three weeks between the two players. After Scholtz beat Mitjana to win the title in the first Futures in Stellenbosch three weeks ago, the Frenchman handed Scholtz his only loss during the three tournaments in the semifinals of week two.

“I’m so happy,” said Scholtz moments after the win. “Especially after losing last year’s final in the third tournament. When I got up this morning I thought about how nice it would be to change that. I can now go into the festive season with a title in my last match of the year.

“This was a team effort though. I could not have done it without my coach Riaan Venter and Jeff Coetzee who have helped these past weeks, my family who supports me in every way possible and the people who made these tournaments a possibility. I had a great time playing here with family and friends around.”

Scholtz, the only four-time All-American in program history, ended his 2017 campaign with a 13-1 record the last three weeks and is ranked No. 354 in the latest ATP World Tour Rankings, which does not include Sunday’s win yet.
