OXFORD, Miss. – Fan events and special guests highlight the festivities surrounding Saturday’s Ole Miss-Texas football game, including a reunion of the 1962 national championship team.
Kicking off the weekend is a pep rally Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT, presented by the Ole Miss Athletics Department and the Downtown Council. Members of the football and soccer teams will address the crowd, and the Pride of the South Band, Cheerleaders and Rebelettes will perform.
Select members of the 1962 Rebel football team, who are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their perfect 10-0 season, will take part in a panel discussion Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism & Politics on campus. The event is moderated by ESPN writer Wright Thompson.
Co-captains of the squad, Louis Guy and Glynn Griffing, will be signing autographs in the Rebel Fanfare beginning at 5:15 p.m. The Rebel Fanfare, which is located just across All-American Drive from the stadium and opens at 4 p.m., includes children’s games and food vendors and is the site of Ole Miss’ pre-game radio show.
A special throwback edition of the game program will honor the 1962 team in addition to a halftime presentation. Ole Miss Olympians Brittney Reese and Isiah Young will also be recognized on the field.
Other special guests include 2012 Miss America Laura Kaeppeler singing the national anthem and retired Navy officer and recording artist Generald Wilson performing Gold Bless America.
The matchup of the Rebels and 12th-ranked Longhorns kicks off at 8:15 p.m., and less than 200 tickets remained by midday on Wednesday. Visit olemissfb.com for tickets and gameday information.
