OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss hosted the Special Olympics tennis event at the Gillom Sports Center Wednesday. The event was sponsored by the North Mississippi Regional Center.

More than 15 clients at NMRC came together to compete in various tennis drills. The Ole Miss men’s and women’s tennis coaches and players helped out at the event.

“It’s great to give back to the community,” said men’s tennis senior Johan Backstrom.  It’s a lot of fun helping them have a great time. It’s rewarding for me and good to see them having such a great time out there.  It really makes you appreciate what you are able to do every day in playing tennis.”

Many of the clients participate in various other Special Olympics events that take place throughout the year including track and field, basketball, and swimming. The Special Olympics mission is to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

“It was a lot of fun working with the people [from NMRC] and seeing their smiles.  They are very genuine,” said women’s tennis sophomore Allie Robbins.  “It makes you appreciate being able to go out and play tennis this weekend and how good your life is, said junior Iris Verboven.”

Men’s Tennis head coach Billy Chadwick’s wife, Julie Chadwick, works at NMRC as the Technology Assistive Device Director. The TAD Center is a community resource program of the NMRC, which operates to help children and adults with disabilities find appropriate technology to meet their needs.
