Ole Miss Hosting Canned Food Drive Event Begins Friday
Collection begins Friday.
Sept. 14, 2011
OXFORD, Miss.- Beginning Friday night, Ole Miss Athletics is joining efforts with the Southeastern Conference for a canned food drive.
As part of the SEC "Together We Can" food drive program, which runs Sept. 16-30, Ole Miss is kicking off its local efforts Friday at 7 p.m. during the Rebel volleyball match against LSU. Athletics department representatives will be on hand to accept food or cash donations.
Led by Ole Miss' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Rebel student-athletes and staff members will be at various Oxford locations during the two-week long drive collecting either money or canned food donations. Opportunities for donation include the soccer and volleyball matches, Walmart, Kroger, Larson's Big Star and the "RebTalk with Coach Houston Nutt" show on the Grove Stage.
The Oxford Pantry is suggesting cooking oil, assorted soups, peanut butter, oatmeal, rice, canned meats and canned fruits and vegetables, but all canned foods will be accepted.
Led by student-athletes, the SEC "Together We Can" food drive is designed to support food banks and shelters throughout the Southeast since the project began in 2007.
"Last year we were able to raise over 6,000 pounds of donated food and our goal is to surpass that mark this year," said R. Steven Cox, organizer of the drive and an intern with Ole Miss Student-Athlete Development.
For more information, contact Cox at 662-915-5775 or by email at rscox@olemiss.edu. Below is the full schedule as announced by the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Rebel Ready program.
