OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss student-athletes do more than lift weights and catch baseballs. Last week, 93 student-athletes from the Ole Miss Athletics Department participated in Reading with the Rebels, an annual event in which student-athletes read to children at local elementary schools.

“The student-athletes are somewhat celebrities in this community so for children to see their heroes read and talk about education is huge,” said Dr. Jamil Northcutt, assistant athletics director for internal operations. “It also helps our students realize the importance of their influence.”

The student-athletes read to kids at Bramlett Elementary, Della Davidson Elementary, Oxford Elementary and the C.M. Scott Center. The mascot (Rebel) appeared with the student-athletes at two schools to greet children.

Senior linebacker/defensive end D.T. Shackelford helped coordinate the event and read to students at two schools.

“Reading with the Rebels allowed me to see the impact athletes have on this community, and there is no better way to give back than to spend time with the youth,” he said.

Reading with the Rebels is sponsored by Ole Miss’ Rebel Ready Program. The mission of the program is to challenge student-athletes to be lifelong learners while pursuing continuous improvement academically, relationally, socially, personally, and professionally during and beyond their careers at student-athletes.

Rebel Ready is the hub for a wide range of Ole Miss Athletics sponsored programs designed to meet the needs of student-athletes and their families. It is divided into six areas: Student-Athlete Assistance Services, Career Development, Continuing Education, Community Outreach, Financial Education and Career Transition.
