OXFORD, Miss. –Ole Miss student-athletes, spearheaded by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, recently participated in an athletic department wide “Adopt-A-Basket” service event.
This year was the second year in which Ole Miss student-athletes and athletic department staff engaged the greater Oxford community and its families in need by creating a Thanksgiving basket.
The campaign took place from Tuesday, November 12th until Monday, November 18th. Student-athletes participated by purchasing select items and then placing the items in a designated container located at each athletic facility. Once the goods were gathered the containers were collected and delivered to the Jackson Activity Center where student-athletes and athletic department staff put together baskets to be delivered to those in need in the greater Oxford community.
Track and Field student-athlete and current Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, Ben Lapane thought that the service project showed the commitment of the Ole Miss student-athletes to the community.
“This project is yet another way for us to show Rebel Nation our commitment to neighboring families as we strive to be champions in all categories,” said Lapane.
The Ole Miss athletic department staff got involved as well with Centerplate donating 150 boxes to the initiative while athletic department employees helped in putting together the baskets.
Rebel Ready is the hub for a wide range of Ole Miss Athletics sponsored programs designed to meet the needs of student-athletes and their families. It is divided into six areas: Student-Athlete Assistance Services, Career Development, Continuing Education, Community Outreach, Financial Education and Career Transition.
