ATHENS, Ga. – Valencia McFarland recorded her 1500th career point, but the Ole Miss women’s basketball team dropped a 84-63 road contest to Georgia on Sunday (Feb. 9) at Georgia’s Stegeman Arena.

McFarland reached the milestone at the 1:01 mark of the first half draining a triple to become Ole Miss’ seventh player to record 1500 points in a career.  The senior point guard led the Rebels offense with 14 points and 10 assists for her second consecutive double-double.

Amber Singletary and Danielle McCray were also in double figures with 15 points and 11 points, respectively. McCray also led the rebounding efforts with 10 rebounds while Kenyotta Jenkins also added 10 rebounds.

 Ole Miss scored the first points of the second half, but couldn’t stop Georgia as the home team took a 58-34 lead with just four minutes off the game clock. Amber Singletary provided a spark off the bench coming in to nail a career-best five three-pointers in the contest.

The Rebels got as close as 19 points in the second half, but couldn’t find a way to stop the Lady Bulldogs who picked up their fifth straight win over Ole Miss (10-15, 1-10 SEC).

Georgia (16-7, 4-6 SEC) opened the game on a 7-0 run before Ole Miss used a bucket from Valencia McFarland to end the Lady Bulldogs run and give the Rebels their first points. The Rebels really ramped up the defense forcing the Lady Bulldogs into quick shots and two triples from Gracie Frizzell, cut the one nine-point Georgia lead to four points at the 11:54 mark.

Ole Miss cut the lead to four points, but the home team used a 4-0 spurt to stop the Rebels momentum and extend their lead at the midway point of the first half. Although neither team scored a field goal for four minutes, it was the Lady Bulldogs who got going first and with the help of an 11-1 run pulled ahead 32-19 at the 6:15 mark

The Lady Bulldogs held Ole Miss to just two FG in the final three minutes to take a 48-29 lead at the break.

The highlight of the first half was McFarland recording her 1500th career point on a triple with 1:01 left in the first half. McFarland becomes one of just seven players to score 1500 career points, joining the likes of Peggie Gillom, Jennifer Gillom and Armintie Price

Ole Miss won the battle of the boards 25-19 in the first half, but allowed the home team to shoot a blistering 55.9 percent (19-of-34) in the first half. The Rebels shot just 30.3 percent (10-of-33) and were just 5-of-10 from the charity stripe.   

Ole Miss is back on the road on Thursday (Feb. 13) when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) from UK’s Memorial Coliseum.
