Head Coach Matt Insell Quotes

Opening Statement …
“We got the win. It was not as pretty as we wanted it to be. We let down in some different areas and we have to improve on before we start on Friday. All in all, I am really glad that we got the win and I’m excited about opening the season on Friday. Today’s effort has got to get better. It was not where we want it and we have discussed that as a team. We will get that fixed this week.”

On where the team is …
“I was very happy with where we are offensively, but we are not there defensively and we have to get there defensively. Offensively, I really like where we are. Those kids with the double figures, I expect big things out of them this year. Tia Faleru and Shequila Joseph were good today. Shequila was nervous. She called me late last night to let me know she had jitters and I told her that’s normal. For her first game it is a pretty good day. She went 0-of-6 from beyond the arc, and I would doubt that she ever does that again. She is an incredible three-point shooter and I think that was her nerves and jitters, but she will get better.

Faleru, I have said it the whole year, she is a key to our team this season. She has a chance to have a huge season. She had 13 points and 14 rebounds in 37 minutes. She has grown and has proven to be very dependable. I was very excited about those two players. Offensively it is promising, but we still got to get there defensively. We can score, but as the competition gets better you have to be able to stop people.”

 On Valencia McFarland’s game …
“I think Valencia is an incredible player, but I think she has to take it to another level. She had a good day, but I do not want her to have good days, I want her to have great days. She has to have great days for our team to be really good. She knows that and she is not happy with her performance today. With Valencia, I need to get her prepared for what is happening next. So she did have a good day but we expect more out of her. She has to have great games for us to be successful this season. That is something we are pushing. She had a great stat line: 15 points, three rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. That is a great stat line, but I want her to do more.”
