Recap

Head Coach Matt Insell

On the game …
“We were better in a lot of areas tonight. Hawaii is a tough team and they’re tough to play over here. Last night they beat a good Washington State team much like they beat us. It’s all heart what they do. They played a good game tonight.”

On several key points in the game …
“They got really physical with us and we’re not real physical right now. That’s something that you can’t teach, you have to either be physical or not.  We gave up offensive rebound after offensive rebound and it wasn’t the defense, the defense was pretty good. It wasn’t the offense, we got easy buckets. They slowed us down a little bit with a zone, but as long as you stand out there and pass the ball around you’re going to slow down with a zone. Once they started driving the basketball like we asked them to do, we got better at it. You can’t dig yourself a hole and you can’t miss offensive rebounds. We just let Jackson control the boards and she got in and got physical. We told them that’s what was going to happen before the game and at halftime. There was no sense of urgency from any of our post players. I will say Danielle McCray played with a sense of urgency in the second half, but we have to learn from it and get better.”

On the Hawaii run at the end of the first half being the turning point in the game…
“We had no sense of urgency during that run. We get the team in a timeout and we talked to them about putting the hammer down and just keep going.  We came out of the time out like we have arrived and there was no sense of urgency. It’s something I keep begging and pleading for them to have.  I’m not going to make any excuse for that-- that was a big turning point. We had all the momentum and to be honest, there were two or three offensive rebounds that we gave up during that run.  It was all Ole Miss, we should have won this basketball game and we didn’t and we have to get better from it.”
