Recap

Head Coach Matt Insell

On the game …

“I was proud of our kids today. We played a good basketball team today. Washington State is a good basketball team that’s going to win a lot of basketball games in the Pac 12; they are picked in the top half of that league. I’ll tell you our effort and if we had that kind of movement and effort, we’re going to win a lot more games than we lose if we continue with that. I was happy with our effort. I’m not happy with the outcome, but I’m happy with the effort. This is a process, if we can off of some things from tonight but offensively and defensively, we’ll get better. We go home to the Tad Pad for the next three and our focus is to win those three and get us back to .500.”

On the energy and effort of the team …
It’s very pleasing about our energy and effort and for the first time in five games I didn’t have to coach energy and effort today. The kids came out motivated today and they were ready to go and for the first time in five games I didn’t have to coach that. That’s pleasing to me because that is process, that’s part of the progress in this process. If we’ll bring that same energy and effort, we wouldn’t be 1-4, we would have won yesterday against Hawaii and we would have won against Central Arkansas. We would have won those games and then you’re sitting above .500. Washington State they have a good basketball team. It’s a process, I’m not happy with the score on the scoreboard, but I’m happy that my team played hard tonight. “

On Tia Faleru
I’m telling everyone in the country about Tia Faleru. Tia Faleru showed up today. I believe she’s one of the top four players in the country. 29 points, 16 rebounds against a Washington State team that started 6-5 and 6-3 inside, and they brought in bigger kids off the bench. Washington State’s coach (June) told me after the game, ‘I don’t know what grade 32 is in, but you’ve got a player there and I agree with her’ Tia has to build on that, she hasn’t played like that all year and she played like it today. If she starts playing like that every day, we’re going to win a lot more basketball games than we lose.”

On the process
We’ll get better, it’s going to be a process and it will be all year. I knew it was going to be. We have to stick to the process and we can’t derail because we’ve lost some games, it’s not because of any kind of scheme or anything like that. We’ve got to keep our effort up and we have to keep going. If we’ll do that, we’ll win a lot more games than we lose.
