Women's Basketball Notebook Oct. 23
Oct. 23, 2013
The Ole Miss women’s basketball team is just a little over two weeks away from the start of the Matt Insell era. The squad has spent quite a bit of time working on their up-tempo offense as well as becoming a better defensive team. This weekend is Homecoming and the Ole Miss men’s and women’s basketball teams will take part with the second annual Square Jam on Friday starting at 6:30 p.m.
Square Jam 2013
Make sure you’ve got Oct. 25th marked on your schedule for Square Jam 2013. The event will take place on the Square starting at 6:30 p.m., and will serve as the official kick off of the 2013-14 basketball seasons. There will be a game of knockout, a three-point shooting contest, dunk contest and lots of other surprises, including our very own head coach Matt Insell serving as a judge for the slam dunk contest. We’ll see you at the Square. #1MISSion
Former Ole Miss Player and Head Coach Carol Ross to Be Inducted into Ole Miss Alumni Hall of Fame
Homecoming weekend will also be a big weekend for former Rebel great Carol Ross, who will be one of seven inductees into the University’s Hall of Fame.
Ross, who was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, is currently the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks and previously served as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Dream, helping them to back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances in 2010 and 2011.
A four-year starter for the Lady Rebels from 1978-81, Ross returned to her alma mater as head coach in 2003. During her tenure, Ole Miss complied a 77-50 (.606) record and advanced to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a WNIT appearance. In 2006-07, Ross and Ole Miss reached the Elite Eight.
An Oakland, Miss., native, Ross has served as a board member for both the American Cancer Society and the Coaches vs. Cancer organization, which honored her as its 2000 Coaches vs. Cancer Champion Award winner. Congrats to Coach Ross!

Coach Insell Talks About the Rookies
The squad has really gelled as a team and the Ole Miss upperclassmen have played a huge part of that by helping to bring along the underclassmen.
“Our upperclassmen realize that our four freshmen could be a big part of our success this season, so they’ve done a great job of helping to bring them along,” said Insell. “Our team really gets along and they’re helping the freshmen because they know that we need them to play right now. I’m excited about the leadership that our upperclassmen have shown. They are not only showing it vocally, but showing it with how hard they are working on and off the court.”
Insell’s first recruiting class comes from all over the world and comes highly-touted but in cliché terms “freshmen are freshmen and they will make mistakes.” Coach Insell echoes that sentiment, but is very impressed by his rookie quartet.
“They are young and they make mistakes but they are really talented,” said Insell. “A normal situation is that you bring them along slowly this fall and have them ready to go with the first game. We want them to be ready to go now. They have to be ready to play and function at a high level speed. They are not used to functioning at this level in terms of playing hard every possession offensively and defensively, but they are making huge strides. I’m really excited about the things they can do on the basketball court. They struggle on the defensive end at this level but we work with them on that. We want their strengths to remain strengths but to also turn their weaknesses into strengths. I would expect them all to play for us this season.”
