BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –After averaging 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in Ole Miss women’s basketball victories over Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 22) and Tennessee State (Nov. 24), junior Tia Faleru was named co-SEC Player of the Week on Monday (Nov 26). Faleru shares the honor with Missouri’s Bri Kulas. Faleru picks up her first career honor and the first for a Rebel player since Valencia McFarland earned the honor on Dec. 31, 2012.
Faleru picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Southeastern Louisiana, scoring 15 of her points and grabbing 10 of her rebounds in the second half. The Alabama native followed that performance with 19 points and eight rebounds against Tennessee State. She also posted season-highs in assists (4) and steals (4) against the Tigers.
With her double-double against Southeastern Louisiana, Faleru posted her second consecutive double-double, a feat she has done twice this season and a first for a Rebel since Nikki Byrd in 2011-12. Faleru leads the SEC with four double-doubles and is the top rebounder at 10.6 rebounds per game. Faleru is tied for the team lead in points (15.0) and leads the team in rebounds (10.6). She is the lone double-figure rebounder for the Rebels, posting five games with double-digit rebounds. Faleru has also scored in double figures on five occasions.
The Rebels close out their three-game homestand on Tuesday when they welcome Louisiana-Monroe to Tad Smith Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Ole Miss men’s game against North Carolina A&T which tips at 3 p.m.
