ORLANDO, Fla .— The Ole Miss women’s golf team posted a top-10 finish in its first tournament of the spring, placing 10th out of 18 teams at the UCF Challenge.

The Rebels ended the three day tournament 28-over (296-295-301—892).  Briana Mao from Virginia won the individual title, carding a 4-under 212 for the tournament.  As a team, No. 9 North Carolina won the tournament, firing a 10-under 854.

“We saw some good improvement as a whole this tournament with our putting percentages and speed control,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “We have been working really hard on inside 10 feet and can already see noticeable improvement.

Now we have three weeks to improve in some areas that got exposed this week.  Also, we need to do some closing or pressure packed drills so that we finish much stronger than we did today.”

Ericka Schneider led Ole Miss, narrowly missing a top-20 finish. Schneider, who finished 21st out of 97 golfers, shot a 74 on the final day to end the tournament 5-over 221 (71-76-74).

Taelor Rubin carded a 73 today while Abby Newton carded a 4-over 76. Kathryn Fowler finished the third round with a 6-over 78 while Stani Schiavone carded an 8-over 80.

Ole Miss’ next tournament is the Norte Dame Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., March 8-10.
