Ole Miss Tied For 12th After 36 Holes at Sugar Bowl Classic

NEW ORLEANS – After inclement weather canceled opening round action on Sunday, the Ole Miss women’s golf team kicked off action at the AllState Sugar Bowl Classic on Monday (Feb. 24) with 36-holes. The Rebels are sitting in a tie for 12th place entering Tuesday’s final round with a two-round score of 20-over par 596.

UCLA leads the field with a combined 14-under par 562 and Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud and UCLA’s Erynne Lee lead the individuals with both firing 7-under par for a two-round score of 147.

“I’m really proud of the level of commitment the team showed today, said head coach Michele Drinkard. “Whether it was a full shot, short game shot, they really committed and it showed. It was a long day, but the team had fun and fought hard; playing 36-holes like true ‘mudders’.”

The Rebels came out fired up and shot some great scores over the course of the first 18 holes. Abby Newton and Maria Toennessen led the way in the first round both shooting a 1-over par 72 in the first round. The duo combined for five birdies and the Rebels as a team posted 11 birdies in the first round.

“The team had so much confidence in their wedge play and it really just oozed into other parts of their games. It was great to see their offseason work start to pay off on the course,” said Drinkard.

For the first round, Ole Miss as a team carded a 6-over par 294 and closed the round sitting in ninth place just behind Baylor and ahead of Clemson.  Alison Hovatter and Taelor Rubin also carded great rounds to start, both firing a 2-over par 74, placing the pair tied for 40th place after 18. Stani Schiavone rounded out the Rebel scoring with an 8-over par 72.

“Our work with our Trackman this winter is really paying off for our team”, said head coach Michele Drinkard. “They have improved with hitting their carry yardage numbers and when a green is missed they are recovering with a short game shot. I couldn’t be happier with this first day of golf.”

Ole Miss continued its consistent and steady play in the second round and with seven birdies posted a round of 302 good enough for 12th place, sandwiched between host Tulane and Baylor. The Rebels scores went up a little from the first round with Newton and Toennessen carding 3-over par 75 to lead the squad. Rubin and Hovatter were on their heels both firing a 4-over par 76, while Schiavone lowered her opening round of 80 to a 5-over par 77.  

“We’re looking forward to getting another go at this course tomorrow. We can’t wait to see what we can do as we close out this season-opening tournament.”

The Rebels will close action at the AllState Sugar Bowl Classic on Tuesday (Feb. 25) with an 18-hole shotgun start.  Fans can follow the live scoring on GolfStat  and also on the GolfStat app available for free for both the iPhone and Android.
