Ole Miss Closes Sugar Bowl Classic in 15th Place

NEW ORLEANS – The Ole Miss women’s golf team closed out action at the 2014 Sugar Bowl Classic on Tuesday (Feb. 25). Ole Miss placed 15th with a three-day score of 894 (294-302-298—894) after a final day round of 298. Abby Newton was Ole Miss’ top individual finishing in 49th place with a three-day score of 222.

No. 2 UCLA took home the team title after finishing as the runner-up a year ago.  The Bruins 21-under 843 total is the team tournament record for a 54-holes.  UCLA edged top-ranked USC by six strokes.  Florida was third, followed by Denver in fourth place and Clemson and Alabama each tied for fifth place.

Newton, Alison Hovatter and Taelor Rubin led Ole Miss in the final round, each shooting a 2-over par 74, while Maria Toennessen and Stani Schiavone carded rounds of 4-over par 76.

The Rebels had four finish in the top 60 led by Newton’s 49th place finish. Hovatter, Toennessen, and Rubin each concluded the tournament with  three-day scores of 224 and a 58th -place finish. Schiavone closed in 83rd place.

Auburn’s Marta Sanz set the tournament 54-hole total individual record with an 8-under 208 to capture 2014 individual medalist honors after starting the day in third place.  Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud finished second with a 7-under 209.

Ole Miss will take some time off before heading to the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame at the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., March 14-16.
