LAS VEGAS – When the Ole Miss women's golf team scheduled the Rebel Beach Invitational in Las Vegas for its first team competition of the spring, the last it expected was to open Round 1 with a frost delay—but that's where the Rebels found themselves for 36 tough holes on Monday.

After an hour delay to start the day, the Rebels battled temperatures in the 30s and winds gusting upwards of 25 mph as they played their way to third place (294-300--594), four strokes off the lead with 18 holes to play. The difficult conditions led to the second-highest two-round score of the season, an uncharacteristic start for Kory Henkes' squad.

"We made a lot of mental and course-management mistakes that cost us numerous strokes today," Henkes said. "There were cold and windy conditions with totally different winds for each round which made it a challenging day. We are looking to learn and grow from any errors we had on the day and look forward to the opportunity for a great day tomorrow."

Julia Johnson and Pi-Lillebi Hermansson led the way for Ole Miss. Johnson fired 2-over par (73-73--146) to claim sole possession of fourth place. The freshman from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, was able to avoid big numbers in Round 1, tallying 13 pars. In Round 2, she overcame two double-bogeys thanks to six birdies, the second-most by a Rebel in a single round this season.

Hermansson's day was almost a mirror image. The sophomore out of Djursholm, Sweden, totaled four birdies to offset a double-bogey and finish 1-over for Round 1. Then in Round 2, she strung together seven straight pars to close her day at 3-over (73-74--147) and in a tie for fifth place.

Katy Harris matched the 1-over (73) posted by Johnson and Hermansson in Round 1. Conner Beth Ball went 3-over in Round 1 and 5-over in Round 2 to contribute to both counting scores. Kie Purdom totaled five birdies on the day and contributed to the count at 4-over in Round 2.

Through the difficult start, the Rebels remained in contention going into the final round, trailing No. 40 UNLV by four strokes. Only two under-par rounds were posted all day, both just 1-under (71). Johnson sits just two strokes back on the individual leaderboard, while Hermansson is three strokes off of the lead.

Round 3 will begin at 10:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. Ole Miss will pair with the two teams ahead of it on the leaderboard, No. 42 Kennesaw State and the tournament host, No. 40 UNLV. The Rebels will tee off from the first, second and third holes.
