MESA, Ariz. – The Ole Miss women’s golf team maintained its sixth place standing at the 2014 Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Arizona. Sophomore Alison Hovatter fired a 1-under par of 71 to lead the Rebels in second round action on Saturday (March 15).

Hovatter, who entered the day sitting in 19th place, had a great round especially on the front nine, where she recorded three birdies which allowed her to enter the turn at 2-under. She was able to continue her strong play on the back nine and was sitting at 3-under through No. 15 before closing the round at 1-under. Hovatter is now sitting in 11th place with a two-day score of 147 (76-71—147).

“We improved today as a team which I am pleased about,” said Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard.  “The wind started picking up towards the end of the round and we continued to do well with picking good landing spots which is good progress for us.”

Classmate Abby Newton had an equally impressive round shooting an even par-72 in second round action. Newton, who fired an opening round 77, posted five birdies in the round and with her round of 72 moved into 18th place.

“I’m pleased to see Alison and Abby score better today and make some birdies,” said Drinkard. “Both left a few out there at the end of the round which will motivate them to close their round out better tomorrow.”

Colorado continues to lead the field and has a two-day score of 589. The Buffaloes Jennifer Coleman leads the individual field with a 139 after a 2-under round of 70 on Saturday.

Stani Schiavone, who led Ole Miss in opening day action, recorded a 4-over par 76 and sits in 18th place, while Maria Toennessen recorded a 79, rebounding from an opening round 80. Taelor Rubin closed with a 81.

In individual action, Kaitlin Voll continues to lead the individual field after firing a 78 in round two action. She has a two-day score of 153 (75-78—153), while Kathryn Fowler took two strokes off her score carding a 78. She is sitting in 55th place after two rounds.

“Tomorrow we need to come out with the same mission of sticking with our process and embrace the routine of evaluating the wind picking landing spots and committing each shot,” said Drinkard.

The Rebels close action at the 2014 Clover Cup on Sunday (March 16). The final round will open with a 8 a.m. shotgun start. For all Ole Miss women’s golf news and information, go to OleMissSports.com, and follow the Rebels on Twitter at @OleMissWGolf and on Facebook at Ole Miss WGolf.
