Ole Miss Remains in Eighth After 36 Holes in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss women’s golf team fought windy conditions at Forest Hills Golf Club to a three-stroke improvement from Round 1 to Round 2.

After firing a 13-over par (301) on Friday, the Rebels totaled eight birdies to go 10-over on Saturday and remain in eighth place at the 3M Augusta Invitational. Ole Miss jumped past Kennesaw State on the leaderboard but was passed by event host Augusta, which shot a tournament-best even-par (288) in Round 2 after a 307 in Round 1.

The Rebels started strong, going 1-over on the front nine to vault as high as fifth on the team leaderboard, though a few more miscues down the stretch put Ole Miss right back where it started the day: eighth place.

“We played really well on the front nine today,” said head coach Kory Henkes. “The team played smart, hit the ball in the right places on the greens and were making some great putts. Marti and Kie played solid golf in the windy conditions. We look forward to learning from our mistakes today and making tomorrow a better day.”

Sophomores Go Low in Round 2
Sophomore Martina Flori set the pace for Ole Miss in Round 2 at even par (72). The Montecatini Terme, Italy native was 2-under after back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, but consecutive bogeys on the eighth and ninth put her back at even par. The adventurous day concluded with a birdie-bogey-birdie on the final three holes, enough to vault Flori into the top 15 at 3-over through 36.

“It was windy out there today so I had a good round,” Flori said. “I made some putts that I missed yesterday. Finally making those putts today is giving me momentum for tomorrow to finish the tournament with a low round.”

Sophomore Kie Purdom also attributed her strong day to her performance on the greens. The Lexington, Kentucky native was one of a few Rebels to put in some extra work on the practice greens after Round 1, and it paid off. Purdom played to 1-under, logging 12 pars and a birdie in her first 13 holes. She finished at 1-over par (73), tying her career-best for 18 holes.

“I stayed after yesterday's round and worked on my tempo until I was 100 percent confident in it,” Purdom said. “Today I focused on trusting my stroke and it showed in my score. Still left a lot of birdies out there, but I'll get them tomorrow.”

The Rebels are set to tee off at 8 a.m. CT from the eighth, ninth and 10th holes, paired with Troy and Kennesaw State.
