OXFORD, Miss. –Behind rounds of 1-over par 73 from Abby Newton and Maria Toennessen the Ole Miss women’s’ golf team is sitting in 11th place at its home tournament, the Rebel Intercollegiate, after round one on Friday (April 4). Ole Miss will hit the links again tomorrow for 36 holes in an effort to get 54 holes in before the inclement weather predicted for Sunday. Saturday’s start will be an 8:15 shotgun.

GRU Augusta is leading the field at a 2-under par 286 and the Jaguar’s Casey Kennedy leads a group of five players that are tied at 2-under par 70 at the top of the individual standings.

As a team Ole Miss shot a 301 in opening round action and sits tied with Samford, headed up by former Rebel Rachel Ingram. There is quite a logjam in the middle of the standings with just two strokes separating second through seventh place and just four strokes separating second through eight place.

“I don’t think we played our best golf as a team today,” said head coach Michele Drinkard.  “Our goal tomorrow will be to go out and stick with our process. We’re going to play 36 holes to try and stay in front of the weather heading our way on Sunday, and that will bring some challenges, but I know that we’re up for it.”

Newton continues her excellent play as of late and coupled with Toennessen to lead the Ole Miss team. The Katy, Texas native recorded a team-best four birdies on the round with three coming on the front nine. The sophomore was 1-under par heading into the final three holes before bogeys on No. 16 and 17 gave her an opening round 73.

“I’m really proud of Abby,” said Drinkard. “She has worked hard to break things into small goals and she had a good round today by doing just that. I look forward to more of the same from her tomorrow.”

Toennessen played one of her best rounds of golf this spring, also carding a 1-over par 73. Playing in front of her family, who made the trip from Norway, the freshman nailed three birdies on the front nine and played a nearly flawless back nine going par on eight of the nine holes. Newton and Toennessen enter Saturday tied for No. 15 in the individual standings.

“Maria played a great round today,” said Drinkard. “She’s playing in front of her parents, grandparents and twin sisters who have traveled her from Norway. She is excited and relaxed and it showed in her round today.”

Alison Hovatter fired an opening round 5-over par 77, while Stani Schiavone and Taelor Rubin both carded 6-over par 78’s on the round.  In the individual competition, Kaitlin Voll led all individuals with her fourth consecutive round of 3-over par 75, placing her tied for 39th, while Kathryn Fowler shot a 6-ovr par 78 and sits in 62nd place.

Instead of the regularly scheduled 18 holes on Saturday, the teams will play 36 holes on Saturday in an effort to avoid the inclement weather that is predicted in the Oxford area on Sunday. The teams will open the rounds with a shotgun start beginning at 8:15 a.m.
