OXFORD, Miss. –The Ole Miss women’s golf team moved up a spot and closed the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate in 10th place after playing 36 holes on Saturday (April 5) at the Ole Miss Golf Course. Junior Stani Schiavone saved her best round for the final round, carding a team-best 4-under par 68 to close tournament action.

GRU Augusta claimed the team title with a three-round score of 871 (286-295-290—896). The Jaguar’s Jessica Haigwood took medalist honors with a 6-under par 210 (71-70-69—210), while Southern Miss’ Brandi Rodriguez took runner-up honors with a 4-uder par 212 (70-71-71 --212.Tulane’s Emily Pentilla rounded out the top three with a 2-under par 214 (71-73-70—214).

As a team, Ole Miss posted a three-round score of 301-302-289 –892 and posted its third top 10 finish of the spring. Ole Miss’ final round of 289 was its best round of golf this spring.

Schiavone had a great second day and was one of two players to card a 68 on the afternoon, which tied for the low round of the tournament. After carding a 75 in the first round of the afternoon, Schiavone posted five birdies and played an excellent front nine. The Pennsylvania native was 4-under at the turn, a number she would maintain throughout the third and final round.

Maria Toennessen also closed the tournament well, firing an even par 72 for the lowest round of her career. Her three-round score of 222 also ties her 54-hole low, a mark she has set twice during her freshman campaign.

Sophomore Abby Newton carded 1-under par 71 in the second round for her best round of the tournament. Her 71 is also her lowest round of the season and is two strokes off her 18 hole low of 69.

Alison Hovatter and Taelor Rubin also saved their best rounds for the final round. Hovatter rebounded from a 79 in the second round to shoot a 2-over par 74 in the final round, while Rubin carded a 3-over par 75 to close tournament action.

Playing as individuals, Kaitlin Voll and Kathryn Fowler each carded 79 in the final round. Voll finished tied for 73rd and Fowler, playing in her final home tournament, placed 82nd.

The Ole Miss women’s golf team will take some time off before heading to the SEC Championships held at the Greystone Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. April 18-20.
