CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Alison Hovatter led the Ole Miss women's golf team in opening day action at the 11th Annual Cougar Classic, shooting a team-best 1-over 73 on Sunday (Sept. 8) at Yeamans Hall. Hovatter's score placed her in a tie for 25th place and tied her career-low round, also set at the Cougar Classic in 2012.

"This is a young team with a great future ahead," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "We didn't execute today and as a result didn't score, but tomorrow is a new day and our goal will be to improve on our focus and execution."

As a team, the Rebels are sitting in 18th place after first day action, with a 17-over 305. Stani Schiavone and Taelor Rubin each fired a 5-over 77, placing them in a tie for 76th, while Abby Newton shot 6-over 78 and sits in a tie for 82nd place. Senior Kathryn Fowler recorded a 7-over 79 and closed the day tied for 91st place. In total, the Rebels posted six birdies on the day.

Mississippi State leads the field after day one action, with a 6-under 282. NC State's Brittany Marchand and Mississippi State's Ally McDonald are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 66. Their 66 is the second lowest round in Cougar Classic history.

Competition continues through Tuesday and fans can follow all the action at the Cougar Classic at Golf Stat. Ole Miss will tee off in the morning group on Monday.
