CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Abby Newton and junior Taelor Rubin both recorded even rounds of 72 to lead the Ole Miss women’s golf team in second round action at the Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 12). Newton’s round moved her into eighth place with a two-day score of 143 while Alison Hovatter is sitting in 10th place with a score of 144.

As a team, Ole Miss fired a round of 5-over par 293 and is sitting in sixth place entering Sunday’s final round. Ole Miss is ahead of Florida and just a stroke behind Vanderbilt and Clemson. It’s shaping up to be an exciting final round, with just five strokes separating second through sixth places.

“Today was a tougher round for us today and the team handled it well,” said head coach Michele Drinkard. “The scoring equation is about sticking to your process and paying attention details.  I’m looking forward to the final round and an opportunity to continue reaching our team goals.”

Newton turned in another exceptional round on Saturday, nailing three birdies en route to her second consecutive round of par or better.  North Carolina native, Rubin rebounded in the second round, shooting par and making back-to-back birdies on the back nine.  Rubin played exceptionally well on the back nine, closing the round at 2-under over the final nine holes.

Hovatter, fresh of her career round on Friday, fired a 3-over par 75. Junior Stani Schiavone also rebounded in the second round, firing a 2-over par 74, while Maria Toennessen fired a 10-over par 82.

Duke leads the field after two days of action, with an 8-under 568. Clemson’s Ashlan Ramsey leads all individuals and is sitting at 7-under par 137.  Competition continues through Sunday and fans can follow all the action at the Tar Heel Invitational at BirdieFire.
