WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior Stani Schiavone shot an opening round 3-over par 75 to lead the Ole Miss women's golf team in opening day action at the Landfall Tradition hosted by the University of North Carolina - Wilmington on Friday (Oct. 25).

Schiavone stuck to her process and after firing 4-over 40 on the front nine, regrouped and was 1-under on the back nine with a team-best three birdies to close the afternoon. Schivaone's round was good enough to place her in the top 20 at No. 19.

Sophomore Abby Newton fired a 7-over 79 on the afternoon, while Alison Hovatter and Taelor Rubin both had rounds of 9-over par 81. Maria Toennessen rounded out the scoring with a 13-over par 85. As a team, the Rebels are sitting in 13th place, tied with Ohio State and Purdue with a score of 28-over par 316.

"We had a hard time adapting to the cold and wind today and it showed in our confidence," said head coach Michele Drinkard.  "Pete Dye course at Landfall Country Club is a great layout and is demanding of the players ability to make good golf shots.  Bottom line, we didn't strike the ball as well as we would have liked, but tomorrow we get the opportunity to step up our game and take on the challenge. Looking for our Rebels to put this round behind them and come out swinging tomorrow."

2012 NCAA Champion, Alabama leads the field after the first day of action with a 3-under par 285 and is the lone team to shoot under par for the round. Fourth ranked Duke sits in second place with a 7-over 295.  Despite the challenging course, just seven strokes separate third through ninth place. Alabama's Stephanie Meadow is the top individual with a 2-under par 70.  Competition continues through Sunday and fans can follow all the action at GolfStat.
