WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Abby Newton carded  2-over par 74 to lead the Ole Miss women’s golf team in final day action at the 12th Annual Landfall Tradition on Sunday (Oct. 27). The Rebels closed the tournament in 16th place with a three-day score of 941.

Ole Miss saved its best golf for the final day of action and was led by Newton’s round of 74. The Texas native posted three birdies on the front nine including back-to-back on holes five and six. After shooting +1 on the front nine, Newton closed strong with par on eight of nine on the back nine.

"After two rounds of letting the golf course and conditions beat us up we bounced back and closed with a much better round," said head coach Michele Drinkard.  "Sometimes it takes a couple of steps backwards to go forward and I feel that is what happened to us this week.  We have some work to get done this month before we head into off season and it will begin on Tuesday."

Freshman Maria Toennessen also closed the tournament with a strong round. Tonnessen was 1-under par at the turn with two birdies and finished the round with a 4-over par 75. Alison Hovatter carded a 5-over par 77, while North Carolina native Taelor Rubin closed with a 6-over par 78. Stani Schiavone closed with 9-over 81.

The Crimson Tide won the 12th annual Landfall Tradition with a score of 867, good enough for 3-ovver par.  Duke took second place with a score of 875, which was 11-over par. Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow took medalist honors with a three-day score of 213, good enough for 3-under par.

The Landfall Tradition was the final fall tournament for the Rebels. Ole Miss will next be in action at the AllState Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans Feb. 23-25.
