OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s golf team will compete in the 2013 SEC Women’s Golf Championship Friday-Sunday at the Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.

The 14-team SEC field will feature five team’s ranked in Golf Week’s top-25 including, No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 Arkansas, No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 18 Georgia and three SEC team right outside the top-25 including, No. 28 LSU, No. 31 Tennessee and No. 32 Kentucky. The field will also include seven golfers individually ranked in the top-30.

Competing for Ole Miss will be Stani Schiavone, Abby Newton, Alison Hovatter, Ericka Schneider and Kathryn Fowler.

“We have had a good week of practice and getting back to preparing for the SEC Championship.  Just like other sports, we are preparing for a new team or in our case a new golf course,” said head coach Michele Drinkard.  “Every golf course has its own defense and Greystone Golf & Country Clubs defense is its length.  This year our yardage is 6,400 which is the longest golf course, to my knowledge, that we have had for an SEC Championship.

Knowing the length of this course, we have changed our preparation to match.  Two areas we added were more long irons and hybrids into greens and then, as a result, longer first putts on the green.  We are looking forward to teeing it up Friday and watching our team execute our game plan.”

Ole Miss’ best finish at the SEC Championship under Drinkard is a seventh-place finish during the 2008-09 season. Overall under Drinkard at the SEC Championship, Ole Miss has finished in the top-10 four times in her five seasons as head coach.

This season, the Rebels are led by Abby Newton and Ericka Schneider, both of whom have played in a team-leading 10 tournaments this year. Newton, a three-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree, is third on the team in stroke average (75.84) and has recorded two top-10 finishes. Schneider, second on the team in stroke average (74.96), recorded a season-best fourth-place finish at the LSU Classic in March.
