RESULTS | FEATURE STORY ON SCHIAVONE

DUPONT, Wash. - Ole Miss women's golfers Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) and Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) concluded action at the 2014 USGA Women's Amateur Public Links on Thursday at the Home Course.

Both players reached the round of 64, making the cut after the first two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. Schiavone, making her third appearance at the Public Links, fired back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 73 to make the top 64, while Newton fired rounds of 73 and 74 to the cut.

In the first round of match play, Newton bowed out falling to T.J. Kliebphiat, 2 &1. Schiavone advanced to the Round of 32 going 1-up and reached the round of 16 with a 3 &1 win against, local favorite, Katie Lee. In the round of 16 Schiavone gave her opponent, Gabriellea Then, a run for her money. The rising senior was up through seven holes before falling 2&1. It was the furthest Schiavone had advanced in her three appearances at the Public Links.

This year's Public Links, the last one to ever be played as the USGA is retiring the event, held a bit of a special place for Schiavone, who dedicated the trip to her late golf coach Tom Lynch who was a Washington native.

"He made me love golf," said Schiavone, who spent 15 years under Lynch's tutelage. "Yes, he was a great instructor and he knew the swing inside and out, but he made me love it. I loved going to the golf course, spending time with him and my brother (Dominic)."

To keep Lynch in her thoughts, Schiavone wears a pendant around her neck with his thumbprint. The other side features an "S" for Stani.
