OXFORD, Miss. – Incoming freshman Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) is set to compete in her second consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, held August 6-12 at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio.
Former Ole Miss golfers Haley Millsap and Natalie Gleadall will also compete in the championship. Millsap will tee off on Monday at 6:30 a.m. CT followed by Gleadall at 7:20 a.m. and Newton at 8:10 a.m. One hundred fifty-five golfers are set to tee off Monday.
“It’s a blessing to be in this tournament,” Newton said. “I’m looking forward to playing better than I did last year. I didn’t make it to match play last year and that wasn’t what I had hoped for. Since last year, my game has gotten more consistent. I’ve learned how to go low and I have more experience now too.”
“I’m proud of Abby and all that she is accomplishing this summer - having qualified for the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Public Links and Trans National Am,” Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard said. “She is having a great summer and I expect these experiences to carry over for her into our fall season as well.
I have been traveling and recruiting the majority of the summer so I am looking forward to spending some time watching Abby, Haley and Natalie compete this week.”
First and second round stroke play will take place Monday and Tuesday. Match play will begin on Wednesday with the top 64 golfers advancing and the final round will take place on Sunday between the top two golfers. A schedule of events for the championship can be found by clicking here.
