OCALA, Fla. – In the last tournament of the summer before returning to Ole Miss for the 2012-13 season, Ole Miss women’s golfers, senior Ericka Schneider, junior Alison Hovatter and sophomore Kathryn Fowler, competed in the inaugural Women’s Southeastern Challenge Matches Monday and Tuesday at The Country Club of Ocala on Ocala, Fla.

Schneider’s 12-member Florida team won the tournament, earning 24 points in the two-day tournament. Georgia was second with 20.5 and Alabama was third with 18.5.

“I have had a great summer winning individually and on a team. Winning is a special feeling but winning on a team is different because you get to share the experience with people,” Schneider said.  “We played best ball, alternate shot, and singles, all match play. My favorite was the alternate shot. I had never played it before so it was a learning experience. It was really neat, not only relying on yourself, but your partner as well. You have to have trust and have confidence in your partner that they will hit a good shot but you can’t get frustrated if they don’t.  They are a part of your team and you want to support them no matter what.  You can be down and out, yet still have someone there to pick you up. It’s not all about you. It’s a collective effort between all and it was a great experience.”

In the Monday morning Four-Ball Matches, Fowler (Georgia) and her partner beat a duo from Florida 2 up.  Hovatter (Alabama) and her partner fell to a duo from Georgia, 4 and 3 while Schneider (Florida) and her partner fell to a duo from Alabama, 3 and 2.

On the afternoon, the teams played Foursome Matches with the Rebels earning a lot of success, winning four matches.  Schneider and her partner beat a pair from Alabama (5 and 4) while Fowler and her partner beat a duo from Alabama, 6 and 4.

Hovatter and her partner beat a duo from Georgia, 2 and 1 while Schneider and her partner beat Fowler and her partner, 2 and 1.

After day one, Fowler and Georgia led the field with 11.5 points while Florida was second with 10 and Alabama was third with 5.5.

On Tuesday, the teams played three ball matches, with Ole Miss players Hovatter (5 and 3) and Fowler (4 and 2) picking up wins for their team.
