OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss women’s golf team continues its fall season with the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by Tennessee at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend.
The tournament runs from Friday-Sunday (Sept. 20-22) at Cherokee Country Club (Par 71-5,897 yards) and features 17 teams. Joining Ole Miss are: Chattanooga, Michigan, Texas-San Antonio, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Campbell, College of Charleston, Louisville, Mississippi State, Missouri, Penn State, Rollins, Tulane, UCF, South Carolina and host Tennessee.
Tulane is the lone squad ranked in field, checking in at No. 18 in the Golf World/WGCA Coaches’ Preseason Poll. Ole Miss is also joined by fellow SEC programs: Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Head coach Michele Drinkard and her squad are ready to get back on the course after opening the fall season at the Cougar Classic Sept. 8-10. “We have had a good week of practice for this tournament,” said Drinkard. “Three areas that we need to work on improving and being more consistent are: our greens in regulation, short game conversions and putts made inside 10 feet. If we can stay focused in these areas then we will shoot some good numbers this week.”
In the lineup for the Rebels this weekend are juniors Stani Schiavone and Taelor Rubin, sophomores Abby Newton and Alison Hovatter and freshman Maria Toennessen. Toennessen, who hails from Norway, will make her first collegiate appearance this weekend.
“Maria has worked hard and is ready to tee it up in her first collegiate tournament,” said Drinkard. I am sure she will have some nerves on her first couple of holes but after that I expect she will settle in and compete. One of the things I like about Maria is that she likes competition and she doesn't back down in a round, she keeps grinding through all 18 holes”
