Former Ole Miss golfer Sara Grantham Shoffner made history in Alabama this week.

The Rebel alum walked across the stage at Troy University’s graduation ceremony last Friday, becoming the first Troy student to graduate with a doctor of philosophy. She completed her Ph.D. in sport management, a program Troy was authorized to offer in 2014. She completed a 250-page research paper on the fit between sponsors and sporting events with a focus on unhealthy food products.

“It was really interesting to review my findings,” Shoffner said. “It was a rigorous process but something I am very proud of.”

Shoffner will continue to present her findings at various conferences and speaking engagements in the future. Shoffner earned her undergraduate degree in business administration in Oxford in 2011. She recorded 14 top-20 finishes in her Rebel career, including nine in the top 10 and three in the top five. She played a key role on some of the best teams in Ole Miss women's golf history, including two top-10 Southeastern Conference finishes and the program's best finish ever at NCAA Regionals, a 12th-place result her senior season.

After an excellent career on the course, she turned her attention to life after collegiate golf. She remained in Oxford and added a master’s degree in business in 2012. She worked in the athletic department as a graduate assistant while earning that degree. Then it was on to Troy, where she made history in earning her Ph.D.

“This is a rigorous program but is something I have always had a passion for,” Shoffner said. “Especially the research side. That is always something that has interested me.”

Shoffner said it is still sinking in what she has accomplished and is glad all of the long nights and hard work paid off.

“Just to have this become a reality is something that is going to be an honor for me,” Shoffner said. “I am so proud and honored to be done officially.”
