WEST POINT, N.Y. – Led by clutch performances from junior Rena Goodwin, the No. 11 ranked Ole Miss rifle team tied the school record with a total aggregate score of 4654 Sunday against No. 5 Army and No. 6 Jacksonville State here at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
The Rebels fell short of upsetting the top 10 teams. Jacksonville State edge Army 4676 to 4675 to win the triangular match. Afterwards, head coach Valerie Boothe was pleased with her team’s showing.
“This is the level the team has been training at for half the season,” Boothe said. “It’s good to get that one in the record books. Everyone was right on pace. Rena Goodwin was really a clutch player today with two personal bests. It was a great day, and this gives us something to build on for our next match against Navy and the NCAA Qualifier.”
At the conclusion of smallbore, the match was tight with Army posting a 2318 to lead JSU (2317) by one and Ole Miss (2315) by three. The Rebels score was their best of the season. JSU fired a 2359 in air rifle, edging Army (2357) by two. Ole Miss shot a 2339.
Goodwin posted a personal best 571 in smallbore followed by a PR 588 in air rifle. Junior Melissa Quartarone finished third individually in smallbore with a 583 and Alivia Yeager shot a career-best 581 to finish fifth among all competitors. Goodwin’s 588 led the Rebels in air rifle, followed by Quartarone with a 586.
The Rebels will travel to Annapolis, Md., Feb. 3 to take on out of conference opponent and No. 13 ranked Navy, in the team’s final match before the NCAA Qualifier.
