LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ole Miss rifle team concluded competition Saturday at the NCAA Qualifier at Barker Hall on the campus of the University of Kentucky with a score of 4612. The Rebels return home to host the 10th annual GARC Championships Feb. 28-March 2 at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
The Rebels were looking for a great score the past two weekends to try and improve their standing for a possible berth in the NCAA Championships, but once again, the Rebels did not score as high as they would have liked.
"Each and every one of our girls put in 100 percent heart and effort today," head coach Valerie Boothe said. "It's hard when you just don't see it in the results at the end. I'm proud of all of all them and their performance. The upcoming weekend will be our last team event for the season and I look for the same amount of effort out of the group."
Senior MaryAnn Banks led the squad in smallbore with a 574 as the Rebels totaled a 2277. Freshman Alison Weisz continues to lead the Rebels in air rifle, posting a 588 on the day as the Rebels finished with a total of 2335.
The Rebels must now wait until Thursday when the NCAA team and individual selections are made to see if anyone will qualify for the NCAA Championships. Senior Abbey Stanec has made it the past two years.
Ole Miss welcomes Army, Kentucky, Memphis, Navy, Nebraska, N.C. State and West Virginia to Oxford next weekend for the GARC Championships. Akron will be participating in the championships, but will not count in the scores this year. They will join the conference for the 2014-15 season. Shooting gets underway Friday with smallbore and concludes Sunday with the finals of air rifle. Admission is free to all three days.
