Rebels Finish Fourth At GARC Championships
Keely Stankey

Feb. 26, 2012

OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss rifle team wrapped up a successful 2011-12 season Sunday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in the final day of the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships.

“I was very pleased with the weekend,” Rebel head coach Valerie Boothe said. “I think our team score was one point off our record, so I can’t be disappointed at all.”

Producing a team score of 4653, Ole Miss finished fourth overall at the Championships. For the third straight year, West Virginia exited Oxford crowned GARC champions after recording a team score of 4681.

Ole Miss’ lone senior, Keely Stankey, put together a senior weekend to remember. The Minneapolis native recorded the top high kneeling score (196) and finished with the second-best combined overall score (1175) in her final Championships. Saturday, she finished fourth in the individual smallbore finals.

“I was really happy with my performance this weekend,” Stankey said. “I put forth my best effort and shot well in both guns, which is what I wanted to do.”

Boothe said the weekend performance by Stankey was fitting.

“She’s just been phenomenal for us,” Boothe said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Stankey and sophomore Melissa Quartarone led the Rebels Sunday.  Both fired air scores of 591 to guide the Rebels to a third-place team finish in air. Meanwhile, Quartarone finished sixth in the individual air rifle finals and Stankey wound up seventh.

While most of the Rebel shooters have now concluded their seasons, Stankey and sophomore Abbey Stanec will continue training. The duo will begin preparation this week for the NCAA Championships, where they will compete as individuals in air rifle.

The 2012 NCAA Rifle Championships are set for March 9-10 and will be hosted by The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
