Gardner Takes Eighth in Smallbore at Junior Olympics

OXFORD, Miss. -- Five members of the Ole Miss Rifle team traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete in the National Junior Olympics competition April 14-19 hosted by USA Shooting. Invitations to this event are based off of qualifier scores shot in December at the designated meet sanctioned by USA Shooting.

Sophomore Harley Gardner was a force for the Rebels as she finished eighth out of 66 competitors in the smallbore competition and 23rd in air rifle. Gardner represented the state of Mississippi as she shot a 579 smallbore score to qualify for the event before posting a 575 on day one and a 574 in finals. Gardner did not stop there as she continued to make her way to the top in the air rifle portion of the event placing 23rd out of 180 competitors after shooting a 410 and 406.

Freshman Jillian Tyler was another Rebel who competed in both the smallbore and air rifle competitions this past week as she qualified for the championships after shooting a 562 smallbore and 388 air rifle. Tyler finished the smallbore competition shooting a 537 and 547 followed by her finish of a 401.2 and 399 in air rifle to put herself in the middle of the pack. 

Sophomore Samantha Sandifer and freshmen Hayley Carroll and Alana Kelly joined Gardner and Tyler in the air rifle competition at the championships. Sandifer, another representative of the state of Mississippi, shot a 395.5 and 398.3. Carroll competed as a Virginia native posting a 409 and 404.3 putting herself in 35th place, followed by Georgia native, Kelly, who shot a 405.3 and 395.6. 

This competition concluded the spring for Ole Miss Rifle, as the Rebels will not return to action until the fall.
