Nov. 2, 2013
MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Facing their third consecutive top-five team, No. 12 ranked Ole Miss shot a season-high 2341 in air rifle against top-ranked West Virginia here Saturday at the WVU Rifle Range. The Rebels are back in action Sunday at the WVU Range facing No. 16 Akron.
The match began with the Rebels shooting a 2273 in smallbore to West Virginia’s 2315. Senior Melissa Quartarone led Ole Miss’ counters with a 577. The Mountaineers were led by Garrett Spurgeon’s 581.
Pacing the team’s season-high in air rifle was senior Rena Goodwin with a 587. Senior Abbey Stanec fired a 586, and freshman Ali Weisz turned in a season-best 585, two better than her previous best of 583 at Alaska.
Mountaineer junior Maren Prediger nearly had a perfect score in air, with a 599 to lead WVU, while Spurgeon turned in a 593.
While the Rebels shot a season-high in air rifle, head coach Valerie Boothe says the team is still aiming for a complete day in smallbore.
“We are still working on our smallbore team score and trying to put it together on the same day,” Boothe said. “We did shoot our season-high in air rifle, so that is some momentum we can take into Sunday’s match with Akron.”
