MORGANTOWN, W.V. – Powered by a school record (2352) in air rifle, No. 12 ranked Ole Miss defeated No. 16 Akron 4630-4605 Sunday at the WVU Range to split their road trip.
Akron led by 10 after smallbore, as the Rebels shot a 2278, but several solid performances in air rifle led to a school record and ultimately the win.
After a 579 in smallbore to pace the Rebels, senior Abbey Stanec came out firing in air rifle, shooting a season-high 591, one off her career-high. Freshman Alison Weisz had her best outing in air rifle this year, equaling Stanec’s score of 591.
“It’s always great to get the win,” head coach Valerie Boothe said. “We really showed what we are capable of in air rifle. Alison proved herself in that respect. Abbey had a solid day in both guns. We will continue to take small steps to get to where we need to be in this part of the season. We are looking forward to a couple weeks of hardcore training before closing out the first half of the season at JSU.”
As Coach Boothe noted, the Rebels have two weeks before their next match at No. 7 Jacksonville State on Nov. 23. It will mark the final match of the fall season and the Rebels fifth top-10 opponent.
