COLUMBUS, Ohio – Saturday afternoon the Ole Miss rifle program witnessed sophomore Abbey Stanec make history, as she was the NCAA runner-up in individual air rifle. Saturday night, other members of the Rebel team were recognized when the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced its 2011-12 All-American rifle teams.
Senior Keely Stankey was selected as a first team All-American in the air rifle, while sophomore Melissa Quartarone was chosen as a second team All-American in the smallbore
The Rebel rifle program had only produced two All-Americans in its entire history before this year.
“This just shows that we are continuing to move the program in the right direction,” Rebel head coach Valerie Boothe said. “It just shows these athletes rewards for their hard work.”
Stankey, Quartarone and Stanec along with junior Kim Coffey, sophomores Rena Goodwin and Alivia Yeager and freshmen Virginia Holman and Evelyn Holman each earned Academic All-American honors respectively.
The Rebels ended the season with a No. 9 national ranking.
