Five to Compete at Rifle Junior Olympics
April 13, 2017

OXFORD, Miss. -- Five members of the Ole Miss Rifle team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete in the National Junior Olympics competition April 14-19 hosted by USA Shooting.

Invitations to this even are based off of qualifiers score shot in December at the designated meet sanctioned by USA Shooting. Junior shooters must make the score cut off of posted a 377, 379 and 365 in air rifle and a 571, 557 and 543 in the smallbore competition.

Freshman Jillian Tyler and sophomore Harley Gardner will represent Ole Miss in both air rifle and smallbore. Tyler came out of the qualifier recording a 562 in smallbore and a 388 in air rifle to secure an invitation. Gardner, who previously finished sixth at the Junior Olympics after shooting a 587 in smallbore on day one followed by a 578 on day two, secured her spot this year after turning in a 579 smallbore score. However, being a Texas resident, Gardner was not eligible for the Mississippi State title, but did earn the invitation through USA Shooting.

In addition to Tyler and Gardner, freshmen Hayley Carroll and Alana Kelly will compete at the Junior Olympics in air rifle alongside sophomore Samantha Sandifer. Both Carroll and Kelly posted strong freshman seasons averaging a 583.1 and 578.4, respectively, in air. Sandifer followed behind the two averaging a 576.1 in air rifle. All three secured invitations for this competition after the completion of all state competitions.

While all five athletes will report to Colorado on April 14, the competition will not begin until April 15 at 12:35 p.m. CT starting with the smallbore competition. The air rifle portion of the competition will begin April 17 at 12:50 p.m. CT and conclude April 18 at 1 p.m. with the finals relay.
