No. 9 Ole Miss Rifle Closes Homestand with Akron
Oct. 13, 2017

OXFORD, Miss. – Ranked No. 9 in the latest CRCA Top 20 rankings, the Ole Miss rifle team (2-0) looks to continue their momentum as they welcome Akron Sunday to conclude the fall home schedule.  The match will start at 8 a.m. CT at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center located off Highway 7 and Sisk Avenue.

Rebels are now 2-0…
After defeating No.12 NC State in their first match of the season, Ole Miss kicked off the homestand with a win over No. 11 Army West Point last Saturday. The Rebels posted an aggregate of 4645 to Army’s 4624, a result of a 2298) in smallbore and 2347 in air rifle.

Haig and Gardner take the lead…
Junior Harley Gardner (Bellville, Texas) continues to lead the team in smallbore as a result of posting the highest score against NC State (581) and Army West Point (578).

When I am shooting, I try to only focus on what I am doing and knowing that I cannot control what anyone else is doing,” said Gardner. For our upcoming match against Akron, we will continue to focus on the team as a whole, using every match as an opportunity to get better.”

Senior Jessica Haig (Constableville, New York) finished first in air rifle against Army West Point with a (592), two points above her score against NC State (590). Freshman Sophia Cuozzo came in second with a personal best (587), following freshman Emily Cock’s (585) and Gardner’s (583).

Our main focus as a team is to practice and perform to the best of our abilities,” said Haig.  Continuing to be a good example to my teammates on and off the range is how I can contribute to our success.”

Scouting Akron…
Akron started their season 1-0 with a win over John Jay College. The Zips secured a 4653-4303 match victory over John Jay by dominating the smallbore competition. Freshmen Matthew Pemberton and Wyatt Openshaw earned the top two scores in smallbore for the Zips with a 578 and 577, respectively. In air rifle, sophomore Cierra Terrizzi led Akron with a 589.

Marsha’s Minute
“We look forward to hosting the University of Akron.  I look for our contest to be close.  Akron has only had one match this fall, and if you look at the numbers, their shooters did pretty well. Last year we defeated Akron in regular season competition, but placed below them at the GARC Championships.  I believe both teams are stronger now, so Sunday should be interesting.”
